Snails on a Plane at Dulles International Airport

This past Labor Day weekend, a traveler coming in from Ghana attempted to bring over a dozen Giant African Land Snails into the states. U.S. Customs agents see a vast array of unusual items coming through Dulles International Airport, but snails are up there on the list of out of the ordinary items. These snails could also have been devastating to American crops; these particular snails are one of the most invasive species and can cause a great deal of damage to crops.

These are not your average snails! Each Giant African Snail is about the size of a young child's balled-up fist, reproduces rapidly, and can grow to nearly 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. Customs had to dispose of the snails because they are illegal in the United States. The traveler was not fined because he declared the slimy creatures.
