On Sunday, July 31, 2011 at approximately 7:04 pm, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke from an occupied commercial strip shopping center located at 46000 Old Ox Road.  The fire was brought under control within an hour but resulted in an estimated $500,000 in fire loss to the shopping center, $350,000 of those damages were to the Super Latin Grocery and Deli.

The incident has been under investigation by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office with assistance from the local division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).  The Loudoun County accelerant detection canine was brought in and alerted on multiple locations within the Super Latin Grocery and Deli.  Investigators were able to take video surveillance along with laboratory analysis to confirm the suspect’s actions prior to the fire.

On the afternoon of August 19, Loudoun County Fire Marshals obtained a warrant for the arrest of Sonia Grimaldi, the owner of the Super Latin Grocery and Deli.  Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Ms. Grimaldi on 1 count of a class 3 Felony (VA 18.2-80) malicious burning of an occupied structure.
