The Waddell Art Gallery Features Faculty Art

The Waddell Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Waddell Building on the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. From now through September 17, the gallery is exhibiting works by the Communication Design and Fine Arts faculty.

This exhibit includes examples of various different media, including glass, painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking. Come on in and check out what these faculty members create while they are not busy teaching!

The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and closed on weekends. The address of the gallery is 1000 Harry Flood Byrd Highway in Sterling, VA.

 

Get Registered for the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics

The 2010 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics is being held September 18 through September 29. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 1! To be eligible you must be 50 years old by December 31, 2010 and live in a sponsoring jurisdiction, which include the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. $10 includes one event and the following events are open:

Track & field, team line dance, racquetball, ten pin bowling, eight ball pool, Wii bowling, bocce, tennis, table tennis, fencing, golf, shuffleboard, chess, miniature golf, bunco, horseshoes, softball hit & throw, backgammon, scrabble, cribbage, yo-yo tricks, duplicate bridge, swimming, diving, pickleball, men’s basketball,  men’s and women’s free throw basketball

Algonkian Regional Park Hosts "Mammals of the Night!"

On Friday, September 10, you and your family will get the opportunity to learn about local nocturnal mammals at Algonkian Regional Park. The evening is free and runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. You will meet in the event center and then go for a walk to find red fox, deer, bats, opossums, raccoons and many more furry critters.

Be sure to make reservations if you want to attend!

Autumn Arts & Crafts Festival Coming Soon

Sterling’s Autumn Arts and Craft Festival is on Saturday, September 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You don’t want to miss the vast array of vendors at this festival. Attendees will get the opportunity to tour the Lanesville House, enjoy live music and watch craft demonstrations.

Children will get the opportunity to make scarecrows, paint pumpkins, and play games. The festival will be held at Claude Moore Park in the Lanesville Heritage Area at 21544 Old Vestal’s Gap Road in Sterling, VA.

Cascades Farmers Market to Continue Into Fall

Come out and support your local farmers market every Sunday at The Senior Center. There is local produce and goods at this open-air farmer’s market that is running now until October 25.

The market is open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and The Senior Center is located at 21060 Whitfield Place in Sterling, VA. Come check it out!

Sterling Man Dies after Being Pulled from River

A local Sterling man died after he was pulled out of Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, VA. The victim has not yet been identified, nor has the cause of the accident. Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman, Natatia Bledsoe, said it was likely that the victim had drowned, but it is possible that he had a medical condition. The investigation will continue.

A caller reported the victim went underwater on Sunday and a bystander pulled the man from the river and attempted CPR. The man was taken to Mary Washington Hospital and was declared dead shortly thereafter.

Calling all Senior Citizen Poker Players

The Loudoun County Senior Center in Sterling, VA offers poker every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All center members are free, and for others the cost is only $1.00. The center is located at 21060 Whitfield Place.
